Situation
As a top leader in an MNC, Pradeep has lived and worked in almost every continent, including stints in India. Following his footsteps, his children studied in different countries and now settled in other parts of the globe. Pradeep is back in India, at least for now.
Challenges
Every relocation presented unique challenges around taxation and investment choices. He literally had to start a new plan each time he shifted to align his investments with the reporting requirements of the country. Of course, the steps in making those investments had its own challenges. Further, the on-going KYC updates and residency status changes were a constant area of discomfort.
Financial Approach
We worked with him all along, ensuring his investments were unchanged due to relocation. We became familiar with new information and consulted with experts. We kept a clear understanding of his goals and key milestones, updating them periodically. In our view, what helped him particularly was holding adequate liquidity in each country in local currency; we encouraged that too. This was at a time when his children were living in various parts of the world needing funds in different currencies, at varying intervals. We maintained such cash flows.
Where we are
- When you are on the move and working at a global leadership role, managing personal finances often slips down the priority list. In Pradeep’s case, our primary responsibility was to keep that in check and on track.
- We ensured the finances for children’s education were taken care. They are now married, working, and pursuing their own journeys independently. The retirement plan is in place and medical expenses budgeted for. The inheritance for children are assigned in the currency and geography of their preference, with flexibility for further relocations.
